Chapter 14
Treat gaming as paid entertainment, not an income plan.
House edge is the casino's long-run mathematical advantage, not the chance that you will lose one hand. Short sessions can swing wildly. Rules, payables, strategy, speed, and total dollars wagered all matter.
| Game / bet | Typical edge | Read this before playing |
|---|---|---|
| Blackjack, favorable rules + correct basic strategy | About 0.5–1% | Rules matter. A 6:5 blackjack payout and strategy mistakes can make the game materially worse. |
| Craps Pass / Come | 1.41% | Don't confuse low-edge line bets with the much costlier proposition bets in the center of the layout. |
| Craps Don't Pass / Don't Come | About 1.36% | The odds wager itself has no house edge, but it increases the dollars exposed and short-term swings. |
| Baccarat Banker / Player | About 1.06% / 1.24% | The Tie bet is usually far worse; check commission and table rules. |
| Roulette: single / double / triple zero | 2.70% / 5.26% / 7.69% | Count the zeroes before buying chips. More zeroes mean a larger house advantage. |
| Slots | Often roughly 2–15% | The exact machine return and your short-session outcome may be unknowable; rapid play multiplies total action. |
| Keno | Often about 25–29% | Paytables vary widely, but conventional keno is commonly among the highest-edge casino games. |
Read the blackjack payout before sitting. A 3:2 payout is materially better for the player than 6:5. Ask about dealer action on soft 17, doubling, surrender, decks, and minimums. A low posted minimum does not rescue unfavorable rules or side bets.
The Pass Line and Come bets have a 1.41% house edge; Don't Pass and Don't Come are about 1.36%. Proposition bets in the center can be far more expensive. Odds carry no house edge but increase the money at risk and short-term volatility.
Single-zero roulette has a 2.70% house edge, double-zero 5.26%, and triple-zero 7.69%. Count the zeroes before buying chips — a visually similar wheel can be a very different mathematical product.
The Banker and Player wagers generally have lower edges than the Tie wager. Commission and table variants matter. The game does not require pattern prediction; scoreboard history does not change independent future outcomes.
Machine speed can create far more total wagering than a slow table. Slots vary by return and volatility, while video-poker value depends on the exact paytable and correct strategy. A near miss is not evidence that a jackpot is due.
Odds, rules, pushes, voids, parlays, futures, and mobile-location requirements differ. Parlays usually increase volatility and operator margin. Set the entertainment budget before the first event and never treat a later game as a recovery plan.
A comp is a rebate on theoretical or actual gambling value, not free money. Never increase bets or time solely to earn food, a room, or tier status. Compare the retail value of the benefit with the additional expected loss and time.
Most casinos do not publish a durable live table-minimum board. Minimums can change by shift, demand, game rules, and event. These are the narrow exceptions Countryman could verify on official property pages:
A players card can track play and unlock targeted offers, but benefits vary by property, game, dates, and gambling volume. Never increase gambling merely to earn a comp. Compare the comp's real value with the extra expected loss.
