Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area

What makes it distinctive

Red Rock Canyon is Bureau of Land Management conservation land, and the agency runs a wedding permit system for four designated sites: the paved Red Rock Overlook on State Route 159, the Red Spring boardwalk platform and the Ash Spring overlook in Calico Basin, and the amphitheater at the Visitor Center. The sandstone escarpment is the backdrop at every one. What makes it different from every other venue on this list is what you cannot do: the permit never gives exclusive use, the trails and picnic areas stay open, and rice, birdseed, butterflies, balloons, arches, chairs and other props are prohibited.

Who it suits

Red Rock is for couples who want the desert to be the venue and are willing to work inside a federal process to get it. The Overlook and Red Spring sites take 50 people and Ash Spring takes 12, so it works for an elopement or a modest group; only the amphitheater takes a crowd. It is the closer of the two desert options, about half an hour from the Strip, which makes guest logistics far easier than Valley of Fire. Apply early, book transport with a named driver, and hire an officiant and photographer who already hold a Red Rock commercial permit, or budget for the one-time commercial permit yourself.

Location and ceremony options

West of Las Vegas on State Route 159. The Overlook is about 1.7 miles south of the Scenic Drive entrance and the Calico Basin sites are outside the fee gate; the amphitheater is at the Visitor Center inside it. Site hours for weddings run from 6 a.m. to between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. depending on the month; the amphitheater's last slot starts at 3:30 p.m.

Starting price and what it buys

There is no venue package; you pay a permit fee. The BLM wedding page states the minimum fee for non-commercial groups is the greater of $115 or $6 per person, and that new commercial permits, where an officiant or photographer is paid, are one-time permits with a $345 minimum. Chapels that already hold a Red Rock commercial permit include the permit fee in their own price. BLM's general Special Recreation Permit page lists a different schedule, a $130 minimum plus $7 per person or 3 percent of gross receipts, and the two pages have disagreed since at least August 2026. Ask the permit office at (702) 515-5371 for a written fee calculation for your date, site, guest count and paid vendors.

Fees and exclusions to price in

• Non-commercial permit: greater of $115 or $6 per person (wedding page); BLM's general permit page says $130 minimum and $7 per person; the conflict is unresolved
• New one-time commercial permit (paid officiant or photographer): $345 minimum, plus insurance naming the United States as additionally insured and an operations plan
• The allotment of ten full-time commercial wedding permits is currently full; BLM says it anticipates a new application period
• Scenic Drive entry fees are included in an approved wedding permit; otherwise $20 per private vehicle, $10 motorcycle, $8 bicycle, $5 pedestrian
• Timed-entry reservations for the Scenic Drive, October 1 to May 31 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., through Recreation.gov, with a reservation fee not published on the BLM page
• No officiant, photographer, chairs or decor are provided; chairs, arches, balloons and rice are prohibited

Photography and outside photographers

BLM provides no photography. Any paid photographer must either hold an existing Red Rock commercial permit or be covered by your one-time commercial permit, which is what moves a wedding from the $115 tier to the $345 tier. Guest phone photography is not restricted on the pages we read. Recreational drones are allowed outside the two designated Wilderness Areas according to the conservancy's FAQ, but the wedding page does not address them; ask before planning aerial footage.

Accessibility, weather and permits

• Apply no more than 180 days and no fewer than 30 days before the wedding; permits are first come, first served, and someone in the party must carry the approved permit on the day
• Red Spring has a fully accessible boardwalk; the Overlook has paved parking and a short trail; accessible restrooms are at the Visitor Center, while vault toilets along the Scenic Drive may lack grab bars
• Published summer highs are 91 to 97 degrees Fahrenheit in June through August; there is no shade structure at the outdoor sites and no indoor backup
• The site stays open to the public during your ceremony; expect hikers and other visitors in the background
• Re-entry to the Scenic Drive after a one-hour timed-entry window needs a new reservation
